A collaborative research project between New York University Abu Dhabi and Tharawat Family Business Forum

ANNOUNCEMENT

We are excited to announce our contribution to “Global Family Capitalism: A Business History Perspective,” edited by Professor Paloma Fernández Pérez and published by Routledge.

Family businesses are a cornerstone of Middle Eastern and North African economies, yet they remain heavily underexplored in academic literature.
In our recently published chapter, we argue that history-informed research is vital to understanding MENA family businesses. The chapter demonstrates the embeddedness of multigenerational enterprises in the region’s unique historical, cultural, and institutional contexts. Based on in-depth empirical analysis of four family businesses from the Gulf, the Levant, and North Africa, this chapter explores how family businesses’ size, structure, and heavy involvement in critical sectors must be viewed against the backdrop of the region’s complex history.
